The implementation of the European Union Strategy for the Danube Region involves work in many directions; however, the main directions—the four “pillars”—are connecting the Danube region, protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity, promoting prosperity, and strengthening positions.
Connecting the Danube Region involves developing transport routes, renewable energy, and tourism attractiveness. This direction involves implementing projects aimed at improving the transport sector and developing a unified transport complex, which includes inland navigation, road, rail transport, and air connections. It also includes implementing projects aimed at developing sustainable energy, promoting culture and tourism, fostering contacts between people, encouraging exchange and cooperation in the field of contemporary art in the Danube region, and developing the information society.
Working in the direction of protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity primarily involves implementing projects aimed at restoring and maintaining proper water quality, monitoring environmental risks, preserving biodiversity, reserves, air, and land quality. Many places in the Danube basin face environmental risks. These local risks, along with issues related to climate change, need to be analyzed, and based on this analysis, mechanisms for rapid joint response should be prepared.
Promoting economic prosperity is a direction of work that involves supporting the competitiveness of enterprises in the region and building a so-called “knowledge society.” The development of a “knowledge society” involves the implementation of joint research and educational projects by the countries in the region. Supporting the competitiveness of enterprises involves creating joint clusters and complexes. The competitiveness of enterprises in the Danube region should be achieved through research, education, and technology, making the exchange of experiences, ideas, knowledge, and technologies very important. Economic prosperity should be promoted by targeted support for scientific and research work, as well as strengthening contacts between universities.
Strengthening positions involves implementing projects aimed at achieving political, social, and economic stability. The countries of the Danube region cooperate to improve the functioning of democratic institutions, state administrations, and central, regional, and local organizations to create a more reliable and secure environment for their citizens. Work in this direction involves increasing institutional capacity and administrative cooperation, cooperation in overcoming challenges in the field of security and fighting organized crime. In different countries of the Danube region, characteristics such as transparency and democracy, rule of law and market economy, overall political stability differ significantly. To strengthen positions, it is important for the countries of the Danube region to work together at all levels, jointly improve public, political, and administrative structures, governance mechanisms, promote the cooperation of cross-border communities, overcome corruption and organized crime.
