Danube Rectors’ Conference 2024

The Danube Rectors’ Conference 2024 took place from 13 to 15 November 2024 at the Danube University of Krems, bringing together university leaders, policy makers and experts from across the Danube Region. The theme of the conference was ‘Leadership in Universities in Times of Uncertainty: Managing Universities in the Danube Region during Multiple Crises’.

The conference focused on how universities can adapt to global and regional challenges, including political, economic, environmental and health crises. The event highlighted the important role of leadership, resilience and strategic decision-making for higher education institutions in challenging times. The aim was to analyse the multifaceted crises affecting universities in the region and focus on developing innovative and adaptive strategies.

The event fostered cross-sectoral cooperation and exchange of experiences by integrating an interdisciplinary approach that combines academic disciplines with societal perspectives to identify robust solutions to prepare universities for future uncertainties, positioning them as important contributors to strengthening societal resilience.

Yuriy Maslov, President of Association, stressed the importance of supporting Ukrainian universities in the face of global crises. According to him, Ukrainian universities, despite the difficult political and economic circumstances, demonstrate exceptional resilience and ability to adapt to change. They should become key players in the integration processes of the Danube Region, working together with other European universities to strengthen academic ties and research.

This year’s sessions focused on best practices in university management, especially in the areas of teaching, research and staff development.By exchanging strategies and ideas, the conference aimed to contribute significantly to the development of more sustainable and adaptable higher education governance structures.  In this context, the Rectors’ Conference supports the reconciliation of the role of universities in the development of society, ensuring that they are prepared to meet current and future challenges.

The conference was also an excellent opportunity to hold the prestigious Danubius Prize Award Ceremony on 14 November, which recognised outstanding achievements in science, policy and interregional cooperation. The event underlined the commitment to building a sustainable, future-ready higher education system in the Danube Region.
