Strategic Priorities of the Danube Region Following the 2026 Kyiv Security Forum

The team of the Association of Ukrainian Regions “EU Strategy for the Danube Region” took part in the 18th Annual Kyiv Security Forum. The event, which brought together leading politicians, military officials, and diplomats, served as an important platform for aligning our European integration course with the evolving realities of global security.

The world is changing rapidly, and as European leaders emphasized during strategic panels, “Europe is returning to history.” In the context of global disruption and the erosion of established international rules, the unity of the European continent and the strengthening of regional macro-strategies are becoming essential.

For the Danube macro-region, this means that our key priorities—integrating transport routes, developing renewable energy, and achieving socio-economic stability—are increasingly taking on a distinct security dimension. Resilient supply chains and the energy independence of countries in the Danube basin constitute our shared shield against both hybrid and conventional threats.

Forum participants repeatedly stressed that EU enlargement and Ukraine’s integration are the only path toward completing the historic unification of a free Europe. Today, Ukraine stands as a key contributor to European security, and our unique experience of resilience must be integrated into joint European projects.

“At the Kyiv Security Forum, we once again saw that the boundaries between internal, regional, and global security have effectively disappeared. Cross-border cooperation within the Danube region is our instrument for strengthening collective resilience. Every new logistics route, every joint energy or environmental project with our European partners makes the entire continent stronger. We continue to integrate Ukraine into the European space through concrete actions and partnerships,” emphasized Mykyta Laktionov, Vice President of the Association.

We also received an important signal regarding the need to preserve environmental balance and to build a “knowledge society,” both of which are integral elements of prosperity under the Danube Strategy. Even in times of war, we must think about sustainable development, as it forms the foundation for our future economic breakthrough.
